Environmental Responsibility

Green Key Waste Wise

MGM Resorts International is committed to being a leader in environmental stewardship, bringing value to our shareholders and the communities in which we operate. Created to increase the sustainability of our company, Green Advantage is MGM Resorts environmental responsibility platform that focuses on reducing our consumption of the planet’s limited resources through innovation, education and efficiency. Green Advantage ensures that we incorporate environmentally responsible practices that effectively lower our carbon footprint throughout all of operations. We believe that a greener business is a better business.

To achieve our sustainability goals, we have focused our efforts on five core areas that contribute to our footprint. These five core areas drive our continuous improvements and the result is that hundreds of best practices have been implemented and MGM Resorts properties have reduced annual emissions of CO2E by more than 100,000 metric tons.

The following are just a few ways we work to be more environmentally responsible:

Energy and Water Conservation

Energy and water conservation is the cornerstone of Monte Carlo’s sustainability efforts.

We have installed energy efficient technologies, such as variable frequency drives (VFDs) that help us reduce our energy consumption. VFDs allow us to regulate electricity flow to large chiller pumps that cool resort depending on the current need of the building, rather than working at 100 percent capacity.

Energy efficient light bulbs have been installed in the guestrooms, public spaces and service areas.

Occupancy sensors are located in the employee areas to shut off the lights when no one is in the room.

The towel and sheet reuse program in the guestrooms helps to conserve water.

Green Building

Monte Carlo uses environmentally responsible practices for remodels and renovation to reduce the impacts on ecosystems.

Special window film prevents the sun from over-heating our rooms – conserving enough energy to power 56 homes for a full year.

During construction of the neighboring CityCenter development, we captured and reclaimed water from our cooling towers and reused it for dust control. Overall, we helped to save over 2,400,000 gallons of potable water.

Recycling and Waste Management

At Monte Carlo, we take our waste management program very seriously and focus on all three R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle – to minimize the materials sent to the landfill.

We employ a comprehensive property-wide recycling program by which the waste from all trash cans is sorted and materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, kitchen grease, light bulbs, glass, and aluminum are recycled.

We have replaced our printed guest communications with email to reduce the amount of paper waste.

Sustainable Supply Chain

Monte Carlo supports sustainable procurement practices by considering the materials, logistics, and performance of all purchases.

We have converted to environmentally friendly cleaning products to promote a healthy indoor environment.

To decrease the amount of disposable products, Monte Carlo eliminated Styrofoam cups from the Employee Dining Room and replaced them with reusable plastic cups.

Education and Outreach

Educating employees, vendors and guests about conservation is an important element of our commitment to the environment.

Our green initiatives are led by a dedicated team of employee volunteers from every part of our company.

Our Conservation Begins at Home program teaches employees how to save resources and protect the environment at home.

We gave away 1,500 fluorescent light bulbs and 700 low flow showerheads to promote conservation among our employees.

The employee Club Ride program encourages car pooling and the use of alternative transportation for commuting to work.

Monte Carlo Green Advantage Highlights:

Monte Carlo completed several lighting retrofits, including both marquee sign lighting retrofits, which save Monte Carlo annually about $100K and brought in additional $38K in one-time rebates.

The guest room lighting upgrade includes replacement of almost 20K light bulbs for more efficient lamps. This upgrade qualified Monte Carlo for another $40k in rebates and incentives.
